Welcome to the Whalers Athletic club Home Page.  The Club is based in Hermanus in the Boland Region of the Western Cape and has around 60 members.  Whalers are friendly people, welcoming all members of the community and visitors. We cater for a wide range of athletic abilities and aspirations (Runners and Walkers). The club has some good athletes who thrive on the competitive aspects of the sport, and also those who just want to run for pleasure or to keep fit.

Saturday morning long training runs start at the Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Village at 6am in summer and 7am in winter. The distance is decided before the runners set off and may be any distance between 15 and 35 km, the longer runs usually before the 2Oceans. Cool drinks are sponsored by the Club.  A vehicle accompanies the runners, so if you feel tired, or that Achilles tendon starts to pull, get into the car, relax and enjoy the Hermanus scenery.

Personal Bests:

Time Trials are held on Thursdays at 6pm at the Hermanus Cricket Club. During mid-winter (1 May to 31 August) the time changes to 5.30 pm. Drinks will be available at a reasonable price after the time trial.  Participants can choose to run or walk the 3km, 5km or the 8km route

a 3km time trial was introduced on 1 September 2005: which as we hoped, attracted more walkers and schoolchildren.

Ode to the 3km:

Spring has sprung, the time has come

To get rid of that bulging tummy

Spread the news, put on your shoes

Get out and start some running

The new time trial, is like a smile

You scarcely know you’ve done it

Only three kays long, just like a song

You’ll enjoy it as you run it!

Whalers AC Library:

Willie Loedolff has very kindly donated a number of very good running books to Club which he has collected over the years. Due to chronic knee problems which he has been experiencing, forcing him to downscale from running to walking, he decided to make these invaluable sources of information available to the club by means of a Library. Arlene Ehrenberg has volunteered to be the official librarian and has the books documented with a short note about the contents of each book. Club members are welcome to contact her and “take out” books for a period, affording all members the opportunity of enjoying these quality books.

The books donated are;
The Lore of Running by Tim Noakes (1st Edition),
Running your Best by Tim Noakes,
Galloway’s Book of Running by Jeff Galloway,
The Complete Book of Running by James Fixx,
Everyman’s Guide to Distance Running by Norrie Williamson,
Precision Running by Roy Benson,
Comrades by Bruce Fordyce,
Running Injuries by Tim Noakes and Stephen Granger,
Cures for Common Running Injuries by Steven I. Subotnik,
Running Injury-free by Joe Ellis,
Die Sport Dieet by Karen Inge and Peter Brukner,
Stretching Book by Nell Weaver,
How to Run a Marathon by Tony Benyon and Kevin Macey and
The Inner Athlete .

Leo Benning has also very kindly donated four books to be added to the Library. These are:
The Running Foot Doctor by Steven I. Subotnik,
Jogging with Arthur Lydiard by Garth Gilmour,
Be Fit or be Damned by Percy Cerutty
The Varied World of Cross Country, Runners World Book 2.
