AUGUST
2007 NEWSLETTER
This year has been the first winter in a number of years where hardly a soul has pitched up for one of the time trials and Saturday morning long run. Regardless of the exceptionally wet conditions, a few members have been active during the last few months. However, most are complaining of the extra kilo that they have put on! Hopefully the worst part of the winter is now over and we can look forward to longer and warmer days. So, come out of hibernation, and join the struggle back onto the road!
********* NEW TRAINING RUN/RACE – the Hemel-en-aarde 14 km downhill ************
This is a race designed to drag you out of your lethargy!
On Thursday 9 August (Women’s Day) the Club will be holding an event which starts from the beginning of the tar road in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and ends up at the Cricket Club. The distance is approximately 14kms, and the event will be timed. There will be a few cars seconding (for those that can’t make it), but the Club Captain advises that all runners and walkers carry a 500mm bottle of Energade. There will be only one seconding station at the Wine Village. Runners must run facing the traffic, until they reach Wine Village and after that to keep well on the left hand side of the road until they reach the pavement at Mount Pleasant. There on, turn up Mountain Drive and face the traffic once again. The race starts at 8am, but if you need a lift assemble at Wine Village at 7.30am. There is no entrance fee. There is also no insurance covering you in this event, so make sure you act sensibly on the road.
Don’t forget, there will a time trial in the evening so don’t use up all your energy

After the last winter time trial – 30 August, the Club will be hosting a bring and braai. Fires, salads and rolls will be provided by the Club, and the normal drinks will be on purchase.
Don’t
forget, there will a time trial in the evening so don’t use up all your energy
Time trials start at 5.30pm at the moment and will be reverting back to 6.00pm from 6 September.
Similarly Saturday long runs will be
starting at 7.00am from the Wine village during August and this will change as
the months go by. Announcements of
the change are made at the time trial.
Congratulations to Gavin Turner, Barney
Louw, Johan de kock, Max Visagie, Brummer Olivier and.
Johan van Zyl Jnr for successfully completing Comrades in June
The event will be held on Saturday 22
September and will be organised by the Hermanus High School with help from the
Club. This year, Mikki Milne will
be in the driving seat, and he would be very pleased if any of us would be
available to assist. It is possible
to also partake in the run, but you must let Mikki
know what you can do (0834467840).
There are plenty of jobs to do before and after the race.
Please diarise this event – Saturday
13 October. There is a full
marathon, half marathon (new route around Bredarsdorp) and a 10km. The gazebo will be erected and everyone is encouraged to
participate and to enjoy the good vibe afterwards in the gazebo.
Leo Benning, Bertie Warren and Rita Pheiffer are to attend and compete in the World Masters Athletics Championships in Riccione, Italy from 3-15 September. We wish them every success and hope they enjoy the experience.
Nicki Payne has a new stock ranging from
vests to track suits. The club
sells kit virtually at cost, so contact her on 0729070387 for your requirements.
· David Hepburn-Brown has had a cartilage removed from his knee but has said he will be back on the road in 4 weeks!
· Andre van der Merwe came off his bike on the Karwydskraal road and had to walk most of the way back home!
· Karen de Bryn has promised the Chairman that she will pitch up for a time trial in August!
· We were about to say, can someone please find a running partner for Susie, and then Elaine pitched up this Saturday and we think we have found a solution. Keep it up Elaine!
· Beer, beer, the beautiful bitter, the more you drink - it gets better and better!
Thank goodness Amstel is back!
· The Chairman has bought a new pair of boots, but would not take up the challenge to run in them at the time trial!
·
Have you got any suggestions or news for the
Club? If so, please contact one of
the Committee members below who will bring it up at the next Committee meeting.
You are all very lucky this month as we have not been able to get our act together to have a go at one of our members! But, have you ever met this person?
· Very keen and runs every day
· Talks incessantly about improving performance
· On a strict diet, and tells you all about it
· Hammers it at the time trial, improving each week
· Does not train with the Club as we run too slowly
·
After about 6 weeks has a
knee/shin/ankle/hamstring injury and is forced to have a break!
Of course, this is the new road
runner who may or may not return!
