February Newsletter 2014

The Committee of Whalers Athletics Club would like to wish all its members everything of the best in 2014.  To date111 have bought licences for 2014. Contact Louise Erasmus in this regard. We would like to welcome the following new members to our club; Sign Mawunda, Gert Mulder, Kate Mapham, Karen Geiger, Thea Kruger, Michael du Plessis,  Henk van Zyl, Murray du Plessis, Jan de Klerk, Vanessa Gartland, David Austin, Evan Austin, Karin Austin, Keir Lynch.  The following people have joined as social members:  Chizelle and Tiaan de Wet, Pieter, Irma and Irmilee Uys.  Welcome to everyone.

The Onrust 10km and 5km races held on 21 December 2013, were extremely well supported with the numbers up on last year.  Whalers would like to extend a big thank you to all who helped on the day and a special thank you to Carina and her team.  We will be hosting this event on 20 December 2014 this year and hope to have a bumper attendance.

We repeat ourselves quite often in these newsletters from one year to the next, however, we have new members joining every year who are not as well informed.  All old newsletters are on the website in case you are interested in the club’s history.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM and prize-giving will be held at 11:00 on 21 March 2014 at Fernkloof. We will have an informal get-together afterwards with sponsored wors rolls. Please bring your own drinks.  This year a new committee has to be elected and members are encouraged to please give this some thought.  The current Committee has expressed its willingness to serve again.

SPONSORSHIP

As most are aware our sponsorship by Gateway Superspar of the Onrust 10/5km races has come to an end.   Although we have not heard officially, we understand that our application for the Lotto funding has not been successful.  In the meantime, however, we ask that members be on the lookout for potential sponsors for the races to be held in December.  Please advise the Committee members in this regard should you be aware of any potential sponsor.

ROAD RUNNING

To all those putting in the kilometers towards the Two Oceans and Comrades (20 entries), we wish them all the best with their training programme.  We are currently following Gavin Turner’s Two Oceans training programme for Saturday runs.   Refer to the website.
TIME TRIAL AND LONG RUNS

For the benefit of the new members, time trials start at 18:00 with the exception of the period 1 May to 31 August when the start is at 17:30.   We try our best to have the time trial results published every week, but we are unfortunately at the mercy of the Hermanus Times. Saturday long runs start at the Wine Village (currently 06:00) and all are welcome as we cater for the fast and the not so fast.   A vehicle goes along for those who don’t want to run too far. Generally Saturday runs happen unless the club is participating in a particular race.  We normally make announcements at Thursday’s time trials.  Alternatively, contact Mikki or Les for details.   There is also a 10km run on Tuesday evening starting at the OK in Onrust at 17:30.

PLEASE ALSO FORWARD ALL YOUR RACE RESULTS THROUGH TO CARINA VAN DER MERWE FOR PUBLICATION AND STATISTICAL PURPOSES.   IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION FOR A POSSIBLE PRIZE AT THE ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING THIS YEAR, YOU MUST PLEASE FORWARD YOUR PAST YEARS RESULTS TO CARINA VAN DER MERWE BEFORE THE END OF FEBRUARY.  E-mail address is carina@cegela.co.za
PARIS MARATHON

Ever since I completed the London Marathon in 2008, it has been my ambition to compete in another International Marathon. A number of my fellow club members had also shown an interest in competing in a race overseas and this prompted me to set up a trip to the Paris Marathon. So, two years ago I started preparations for the Paris Marathon 2014, but due to my wife’s illness, I’ve since had to withdraw.

However, six Whalers have committed to the race and I am so excited to be able to experience the event vicariously through them!!  I am so excited for the following members who have persevered, despite the weak Rand/Euro exchange rate and will be running on Sunday 6 April: Carina vd Merwe, Karen De Bruyn, Christine Hibberd, Mia Mostert, Elmien Vermaak and Les Hanna, who will not be running, but will be carrying the ladies’ luggage and ordering their drinks (in French!!)

The group will depart on 1 April and will travel via Dubai to Paris. They have been very fortunate to have booked an apartment close to where the race will start. They will be in Paris from 2-9 April, with the race taking place on Sunday 6 April.

Les will then be going to London via the Eurostar, to visit his ‘English family’, while the girls will be off to barge on the French canals from 10 – 15 April. They will begin in Tanay and end in Migennes and will fly back to CT on 16 April.

On behalf of the club, Bon Voyage!! I’m sure that this will be an experience of a lifetime and I cannot wait to hear all about the race and your experiences, once you return!!

Congratulations, Anzel!

Anzel Du Plessis recently competed in the WP Triathlon Champs and she finished second in her age group! She has been selected to represent WP at the Nationals in East London on 23 March. She was also the first lady home in the WP Duathlon Champs and will also be representing WP at the Nationals in Pretoria on 8 March.

We wish her every success at the upcoming National tournaments.

Congratulations Arlene

Arlene Ehrenberg became a competitive walker 8 years ago in August 2005.  At the Onrus 10km race held in December she came second in the 70 age category and received her 50th age category prize as a walker.

Well done Arlene

SAMA Kampioenskappe 25/26 April in Rustenburg

Algemeen/General

Please consider helping our athletes to get to the venues in Cape Town.

Training – This is usually on a Tuesday from about 16h15 onwards at the High School. Contact Leo to confirm on 028 316 4960 or 071 014 2723.

Boland Meesters

Here is something about road running that I am sure all the road runners in the club will appreciate. I have always combined road running and track participation over the years.

“In 1988 I was running my 100th marathon (I have always included ultras as marathons and have completed 8 Comrades and 25 Two Oceans and a few other ultras) in the Foot of Africa in Bredasdorp. It was also my 10th `Foot` and asked the organisers if I could be given no. 100 as my race number. They agreed to this. On the bus to the start somewhere in the veld I found myself sitting next to a chap with no. 99 on his chest.  I had a good run and ran the second half 10 min faster than the first half and finished in 3: 26 and was also the first master home. My age was 55.

When I started my 1/2 loop of the showground field I heard the announcer, Harold Berman say “and here comes Leo Benning in the 100th position”. What a pleasant surprise!  However, with about 50 m to go a young chap sprinted past me to finish in the 100th place while I was 101st. What a number of coincidences!”
